Thinking in decades

Almost every advantage available to an ordinary investor comes from being able to wait. It is also the hardest thing to actually do.

A professional fund manager is judged quarterly. A pension has obligations on a schedule. An individual investing their own money for thirty years has no such constraint, and that is the one genuine structural advantage available to them.

What the advantage consists of

  • You never have to sell at the bottom. Nobody can redeem your capital or mark your performance against a benchmark this quarter.
  • You can hold through a drawdown without explaining it to anyone.
  • You can wait for a price without being accused of doing nothing.

Every one of those is a real edge, and every one of them is available for free. None requires better information or analysis.

Why it is so hard to keep

Interpretation
A long horizon is a decision made repeatedly, not once
Nobody abandons a thirty-year plan in year one. They abandon it in a bad month in year four, for what feels at the time like a specific and reasonable cause. The horizon is not something you set; it is something you keep re-choosing under pressure.

What it requires

  1. Not needing the money. A long horizon is only real if your near-term needs are met from somewhere else. This is what a cash reserve is for.
  2. A position size you can sit with. See position sizing.
  3. Accepting uneventful periods. Most of the return arrives in a small number of periods you cannot identify in advance, which means most of the time nothing appears to be happening.

The compounding point, stated carefully

Compounding rewards uninterrupted time more than it rewards a high rate. A moderate return sustained without interruption generally beats a higher return punctuated by a large loss — which follows directly from the arithmetic in compound growth.

Thinking in decades is not the same as ignoring your portfolio for decades. It means the default is to do nothing, and changes require a reason beyond the price having moved.
